Up until the beginning of the 20th century it served as an Arsenal and a Military Museum. In the Second World War, the palace was almost entirely destroyed by bombings. It was reconditioned and since 1990 it hosts permanent art and history expositions.

The Charlottenburg Palace was put together at the end of the 17th century by Frederick III, as a summer residence for his wife, Sophie Charlotte.
